Allen says Ralph Ellison’s “Invisible Man” changed the way she views life in the U.S. The classic American novel follows a promising young Black man as he moves from the racist South to New York City, which he ultimately finds no less inhospitable.
Allen said that the book taught her “to see in [her] country the extraordinary tragicomic mix of dark and light that defines us.” Not only that, but it gave her perspective for her own path.
“What beloved book hasn’t helped in some way with life’s challenges?” she said.
