Dede To Join GSE Faculty

Chris Dede, an expert in technology and education, will join the faculty of the Harvard Graduate School of Education as a full professor in August 2000.

Dede researches the evolution of information technology in education, emerging technologies that are improving classroom practices, and educational technology policy.

With grants from the National Science Foundation, the Joyce Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Education, Dede is currently developing educational environments based on virtual reality technology, aiding urban school districts in using technology, and creating and assessing technology-based science education materials for learning-disabled secondary students.

As a former senior program director for the National Science Foundation, he assisted in starting a new funding program for research on education policy and practice. As a member of the U.S. Department of Education’s expert panel on educational technology and a member of the National Association of Governors’ task force on educational technology, he identifies the country’s most innovative and effective educational technology programs.

Dede is a former policy fellow in the Office of the Director at the National Institute for Education. He served as a visiting scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Foundations of Educational and Psychological Assessment and has been an expert panelist on instructional technologies for U.S. AID, the U.S. Public Health Service, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the U.S. Advisory Council on the National Information Infrastructure.

Dede was editor of the 1998 Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) Yearbook, “Learning with Technology.” He is the author of “Evaluating the Effectiveness of Technology Initiatives” (1998), “Rethinking How to Invest in Educational Technology” (1997), and “Emerging Technologies and Distributed Learning” (1996).Dede will continue to serve in a joint appointment at George Mason University, as a full professor in the School of Information Technology & Engineering and the School of Education, through July 2000.
