Music, words to honor Longfellow on poet’s 200th birthday

The Boston Landmarks Orchestra will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) with a March 25 tribute at Sanders Theatre.

The two-hour tribute, scheduled to kick off at 2 p.m., will include a performance of “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere” by Julian Wachner (narrated by David Connor) and the final movement of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 9 with Ya-Fei Chuang as guest soloist. Additionally, Matthew Pearl, author of the bestselling novel “The Dante Club,” will give a tribute to Longfellow; the Haggerty School Chorus will sing Longfellow’s poem “Snowflakes”; and baritone Brett Johnson will perform “A Psalm of Life.”

Free and open to the public, the tribute is sponsored by the Longfellow Bicentennial Committee, Harvard University, and the Harvard Extension School Alumni Association. Popular media personality Christopher Lydon will host the proceedings, which will include the unveiling of the 2007 Henry W. Longfellow commemorative U.S. postage stamp. Devotees of the poet can also visit the special Longfellow exhibit on display at Houghton Library through April 21.
