Ishikawa receives national service citation

Planning and special projects officer for the Division of Continuing Education Wayne K. Ishikawa, Ph.D. ’78, is the recipient of the 2011 Walton S. Bittner Service Citation from the University Professional and Continuing Education Association (UPCEA). The award recognizes a member for outstanding contributions to continuing education at his or her institution, and for service of major significance to UPCEA. Ishikawa received the award at UPCEA’s annual conference in Toronto, Canada.

Ishikawa has taught at the Harvard Extension School since 1977 and has been the associate editor of the Continuing Higher Education Review (CHER), the official publication of UPCEA, since 1998. Through the years, he has also been dean of students for the Harvard Summer School, director of the Harvard Institute for Learning in Retirement, and personnel officer for the Division of Continuing Education. He currently also coordinates the Division’s foreign language instruction.

Admired by his continuing education colleagues, Wayne Ishikawa’s contributions to his institution and UPCEA are broad and well-respected. Says Harvard Extension School Dean Michael Shinagel, “As editor of CHER, I have relied on the professionalism of Wayne in assembling a top quality publication each year on behalf of UPCEA. He solicits articles, edits them, plans layouts, oversees production and distribution, and contributes capsule book reviews to each issue.  He is the “invisible hand” behind the excellence of CHER.”
